Course Description

Develop stronger time, deeper harmonic understanding, and more effective practice habits. This four-week masterclass focuses on using the metronome as a musical tool rather than simply a timekeeper. Students will learn to internalize the pulse, hear chord movement more clearly, and build confidence playing with consistent, professional-level time.

Week 1 – Building an Unshakable Time Feel

Focus: Internal pulse and rhythmic accuracy

  • Why great rhythm is the foundation of great improvisation

  • Proper metronome practice techniques

  • Playing with the metronome on all four beats

  • Counting subdivisions (eighth notes and triplets)

  • Developing relaxed, consistent time

  • Practice exercises over major scales and simple chord progressions

  • Daily practice routine

Week 2 – Hearing Harmony Through Rhythm

Focus: Connecting harmony to the pulse

  • Practicing chord changes with a metronome

  • Locking chord voicings into the groove

  • Hearing harmonic rhythm

  • Playing ii–V–I progressions with steady time

  • Voice leading while maintaining consistent rhythm

  • Comping exercises emphasizing time and feel

  • Applying rhythmic variations without losing the pulse

Week 3 – Advanced Metronome Concepts

Focus: Internalizing time

  • Setting the metronome on beats 2 & 4

  • Playing with the metronome on beat 4 only

  • Using slow tempos to expose weaknesses

  • Practicing behind, on, and ahead of the beat

  • Improvising while maintaining strong internal time

  • Developing swing feel and rhythmic confidence

  • Listening exercises to strengthen rhythmic awareness

Week 4 – Integrating Rhythm, Harmony & Musical Expression

Focus: Bringing everything together

  • Combining comping and single-note improvisation

  • Creating rhythmic interest through phrasing

  • Practicing complete jazz standards with the metronome

  • Balancing harmonic accuracy with rhythmic creativity

  • Building an effective long-term metronome practice routine

  • Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Questions, review, and final musical applications
